Upwork for JavaScript Developers: How to Win React, Node and Next.js Jobs

Upwork for JavaScript Developers: How to Win React, Node and Next.js Jobs

JavaScript is one of the broadest skills on Upwork, which is both the opportunity and the problem. There is a lot of work, and a lot of developers who list the same skill. The way through is to stop selling JavaScript and start selling one outcome in one stack. This guide shows how to choose that stack, find the jobs, price yourself and write the proposal.

What JavaScript developers charge on Upwork

Upwork's JavaScript hiring guide gives clients these rate bands.

LevelHourly rate
Junior$15 to $50+
Intermediate$35 to $100+
Senior or advanced full-stack$100 to $150+

The bands overlap heavily, which tells you rate is driven by positioning more than by years. A developer who is clearly the right person for a Next.js dashboard can charge intermediate rates with a thin Upwork history.

Choose a lane

Pick one row and build your profile around it. You can change later.

LaneProfile title exampleProof to show
React front endsReact and TypeScript Developer for SaaS DashboardsA live dashboard with real data states
Next.js sites and appsNext.js Developer: Fast Marketing Sites and Web AppsA deployed site with performance scores
Node back endsNode.js API Developer: REST, Queues, IntegrationsAPI docs and a public repo
Full-stack MVPsFull-Stack JavaScript Developer for Startup MVPs (Next.js, Node)One shipped product, start to finish
Fixes and performanceJavaScript Performance and Bug-Fix SpecialistBefore and after metrics

Add TypeScript to whichever lane you choose. Upwork's guide tells clients to list it among the skills to look for, alongside React, Node.js and Express.

Searches worth saving

Upwork search accepts AND, OR, NOT, parentheses and *, in capitals. Save one search per lane.

LaneSearch string
Reactreact AND (typescript OR dashboard OR saas) NOT (wordpress OR shopify OR wix)
Next.jsnext.js AND (app OR saas OR landing OR migration)
Node(node.js OR nestjs OR express) AND (api OR backend OR integration)
MVPs(mvp OR prototype OR startup) AND (react OR next.js OR node.js)
Fixes(fix OR bug OR performance OR slow) AND (react OR next.js OR node.js)

Excluding page builders and store platforms matters here. A search for JavaScript alone returns many small theme tweaks that pay little and attract many bids. The full search method is in How to Find Jobs on Upwork as a Developer.

Stand out in a crowded skill

Three things separate the proposals that get opened.

  1. A title that names the outcome. Clients see your title before anything else. See our profile tips for developers.
  2. Something they can click. A deployed app beats a description of one. For front-end work, a live link is your whole pitch.
  3. Evidence you read the post. Name their stack and their problem in the first two lines.

Pricing and the first contract

Set your floor with our developer day-rate calculator, then add the service fee shown on the proposal screen. Upwork Fees for Developers has the formula.

For a first review, look for a small fixed-price fix with a verified client who has hired before. Because each proposal costs Connects, check the numbers in Upwork Connects Explained before bidding on anything under $100.

A proposal that works for JavaScript jobs

Hi [name],

Your dashboard takes several seconds to load because every chart fetches
its own data on mount. Moving those calls server-side in Next.js and
caching them usually fixes this without touching the design.

Here is one I rebuilt the same way, with the before and after numbers:
[live link]

I can send a short written audit of the three slowest pages within two
days of starting.

One question: are you on the App Router or the Pages Router?

[your name]

Use your own real project and numbers. More examples are in our Upwork proposal template for developers.

What clients are told to look for

Upwork's guide tells clients to ask for scalable, testable, well-documented code, and to check frameworks, back-end technologies, build tools and version control. It also tells them to assess communication and project management.

So answer those in your profile before they ask: a public GitHub repo with a readable README, tests in at least one project, and a proposal written in plain English.

If you also work in PHP, our guide to Laravel jobs on Upwork covers the same approach for that stack. Our JavaScript tutorials are a good source of small projects to build as proof.
