A client decides whether to open your proposal from three things: your photo, your title and the first two lines of your overview. Everything else on your profile only matters after that click. This guide shows developers how to write each part, what changed when Upwork retired specialised profiles in 2026, and what to fix first if your proposals are not being opened.

What clients see first
Upwork's guide to building your freelancer profile notes that only the first 250 or so characters of your overview appear in search results. Your title sits above that. So the test for a profile is simple: do the title and the first 250 characters tell a client what you build and for whom?
The profile title
Upwork's advice is to be descriptive, highlight your primary talents and keep it short, instead of listing every skill you have. For developers that means stack plus outcome.

| Weak title | Stronger title |
|---|---|
| Full Stack Developer | Laravel and Vue Developer for SaaS Products |
| PHP / Laravel / WordPress / React / Node Expert | Laravel API Developer: Stripe, Webhooks, Integrations |
| Senior Software Engineer | React and TypeScript Developer for Data Dashboards |
| Web Developer | Next.js Developer for Fast Marketing Sites |
A narrow title feels risky because it seems to rule out work. In practice it rules you in. A client with a Stripe problem picks the Stripe developer.
The overview: write the first 250 characters first
Open with what you do, for whom, and one piece of proof. Then stop and count.
I build and rescue Laravel applications for SaaS founders. Recent work:
moved a booking platform from Laravel 8 to 12 with zero downtime and cut
page load by half. If your app is slow, stuck on an old version or
failing in production, I can help. That is about 250 characters, and it works without the rest. Below it, add:
- three or four services, each as one line
- two short results with numbers
- how you work: updates, time zone, tools
- what you do not do, which builds trust and filters bad fits
Do not include contact details. Upwork does not allow them in a profile.

Photo
You need a photo to submit proposals at all. Upwork asks for a clear, headshot-style picture of you. Sunglasses, logos, clip art, group shots and digitally altered images are not allowed. Plain background, good light, face the camera.
Skills
You can add up to 15 skills. Use the names clients type into job posts, and order your thinking around one stack.
- Laravel developer: Laravel, PHP, MySQL, REST API, Filament, Livewire, Vue.js, Stripe, Redis
- JavaScript developer: React, TypeScript, Next.js, Node.js, REST API, PostgreSQL, Tailwind CSS
Leave out skills you would not want a job in. Listing WordPress brings WordPress invites.

Portfolio: three strong items beat ten weak ones
Your portfolio must be your own work. For each item, give the client four things:
- the problem, in one sentence
- what you built and the stack
- the result, with a number if you have one
- a live link, repo or screen recording
No client work you can show yet? Build one realistic project. Our tutorial on building a multi-tenant SaaS admin panel with Filament v5 makes a solid Laravel piece, and our JavaScript tutorials have smaller ideas.
Specialised profiles are gone: what to do instead
Until 2026 you could create separate specialised profiles, each with its own title and overview. Upwork discontinued them on 28 May 2026. You now have one profile, and Upwork highlights the work history, reviews, portfolio items and skills that best match each client's search or job post.

That changes the advice in older guides:
- Your one title has to carry your main niche. Pick it deliberately.
- Portfolio items do the specialising. Title each one with the stack and the outcome, so the right one surfaces for the right job.
- Skills matter more. They are part of how your profile is matched.
- If you had specialised profiles, your portfolio, earnings and work history moved to your main profile automatically. Titles, overviews and skills did not, so copy over anything worth keeping.
Employment history and other experience
You can add up to 100 entries of each, and they can include freelance work done outside Upwork. Add the two or three roles that support your niche. This matters most when you have no Upwork reviews yet.
Your hourly rate
Upwork describes the profile rate as a starting point, not a fixed rule. You can bid differently on each job. Set the profile rate at what you want to earn, using our developer day-rate calculator, and account for the costs in Upwork Fees for Developers.

A 20-minute profile audit
- Title names one stack and one outcome
- First 250 characters of the overview stand alone
- Photo is a clear headshot
- Skills list has no stack you do not want work in
- Three portfolio items, each with a result and a link
- No contact details anywhere
Once the profile passes, move on to finding the right jobs and sending a short, specific proposal. Stack-specific title ideas are in our guides to Laravel jobs and JavaScript jobs on Upwork.
