The developers who win on Upwork do not send more proposals. They see the right jobs sooner and skip the wrong ones faster. This guide covers the three parts of that: building searches that surface good jobs, reading a job post in 30 seconds, and spotting the posts that will waste your Connects.

Every proposal costs money, so job selection is where your budget is won or lost. If you are new to how that works, read Upwork Connects Explained first.
Start with search, not the feed
The default feed shows what Upwork thinks matches your profile. It is a reasonable start, but it is the same feed every similar developer sees. Your own searches are where you find less crowded jobs.

Upwork's job search supports Boolean operators. They must be typed in capitals to work:
ANDreturns jobs with every keywordORreturns jobs with at least one keywordNOTexcludes a term- Parentheses group sub-searches
*is a wildcard for partial terms
The +, - and ! operators are not supported, so use the words. Upwork documents the full list in its guide to advanced search techniques.
Here are searches worth saving for the two stacks we cover most on this blog.

| Goal | Search string |
|---|---|
| Laravel work, no page builders | laravel AND (api OR saas OR filament OR livewire) NOT (wordpress OR elementor) |
| Laravel upgrades and rescue jobs | laravel AND (upgrade OR migrat* OR legacy OR refactor) |
| React and Next.js builds | (react OR next.js) AND (typescript OR dashboard OR saas) NOT (shopify OR wix) |
| Node back-end work | (node.js OR nestjs OR express) AND (api OR backend OR integration) |
| Bug fixes with a clear scope | (fix OR bug OR debug) AND (laravel OR react OR node.js) |
Advanced search also lets you search job titles only, or Upwork-recognised skills only. A title search is the quickest way to cut noise, because a client who writes Laravel in the title wants a Laravel developer.
Save your searches and let them run
Once a search returns jobs you would apply to, choose Save Search at the top of the results. Upwork lets you save up to 30 searches, and you can rename or delete them later.

A practical setup for a developer is five to eight saved searches: one per sub-niche, plus one for rescue work and one for small fixes. Check them at the same times each day.
On the paid plan, instant job alerts notify you when a new job matches your saved searches. Whether that is worth paying for is covered in Is Upwork Plus Worth It?.

Filters that matter
Use the filters on the left of the results to narrow each search before saving it. Four are worth setting every time:
- Experience level. Intermediate and Expert posts attract clients who expect to pay for skill.
- Client history. Filter for clients who have hired before.
- Payment verified. A verified payment method is the minimum bar.
- Budget or hourly range. Set a floor that matches your rate. Our day-rate calculator helps you work that out.
Read a job post in 30 seconds
Before you spend Connects, check the client panel on the right of the post. Upwork's own advice on spotting fake job posts boils down to the same checks.
| Check | Good sign | Bad sign |
|---|---|---|
| Payment method | Verified | Unverified |
| Hire rate and history | Has hired and completed projects | Many posts, few hires |
| Reviews from freelancers | Consistent and specific | None, or complaints about scope |
| Description | Names the stack, the goal and a budget | Vague, no budget, copied text |
| Proposal activity | Client is viewing and interviewing | Dozens of proposals, no interviews |
Then read the description for one thing: can you say back what the client wants in a single sentence? If not, the client probably cannot either, and the project will drift.

Red flags that cost developers money
Skip the post, or report it, if you see any of these:
- A request to move to Telegram, WhatsApp or email before a contract exists
- An unpaid test project or trial task
- Pay far above the market rate for simple work
- Requests for ID, bank details or account access early on
- Any fee you have to pay first, such as training or equipment
- Offers to buy or rent your Upwork profile
Keep messages and payment on the platform until a contract starts. Use Flag as inappropriate on the post if it looks like a scam.
A daily routine that works
- Check saved searches twice a day, at times when your target clients are awake.
- Open only posts that pass the title test.
- Run the 30-second client check.
- Shortlist three, apply to the best one or two.
- Log what you applied to and what replied, so you can see which searches pay off.
When you have a job worth applying to, the next steps are your profile and your proposal. For stack-specific tactics, see Laravel jobs on Upwork and JavaScript jobs on Upwork.
FAQ
Is it hard to find jobs on Upwork as a new developer?
It is harder without reviews, because clients have less to go on. Narrow searches, small fixed-price jobs and a specific profile title shorten the wait.
How many saved searches can I have on Upwork?
Up to 30.
Do Boolean searches work on Upwork?
Yes. AND, OR, NOT, parentheses and the * wildcard work, as long as the operators are in capitals.
