The bigger saving comes from efficiency. Because Opus 5.5 finishes tasks with fewer tokens, Anthropic puts the overall reduction closer to 40% for typical workloads. Cache reads dropping by 60% is a big deal for agent loops that re-send long system prompts on every turn.

Faster, and it writes more clearly

The model is faster to serve, reflecting lower compute requirements. Anthropic also changed how Opus communicates: it's meant to use less jargon and lead with the important information. Safety: the first release under "pacing the frontier"

Breaking changes developers must check

This is the part that will bite production code. Anthropic's "What's new in Claude Opus 5.5" docs list four breaking changes for apps currently running on Opus 5:

1. Thinking can't be disabled. If your code turns extended thinking off, requests will fail.
2. Forced tool use now returns an error. Setting tool_choice to force a specific tool is no longer accepted.
3. Thinking blocks are tied to the model and conversation. You can't replay a thinking block from a different model or conversation. (Enforced by default for accounts created on or after Aug 31, 2026.)
4. The older computer_20251124 computer-use tool isn't accepted on the Claude API and Google Cloud.

The first three also apply to Fable 5.1. There's also a non-breaking shape change: text between tool calls now arrives inside thinking blocks, which appear empty at the default display setting. If your parser only reads the first content block, update it to filter for type: "text".

Watch out: The New Stack reports that Opus 5.5's safety classifiers can silently reroute some requests to an older model mid-workflow. If you log model IDs per response, you'll catch this , if you don't, start now.

Should you upgrade?

Yes, for most workloads , especially long-running agents and coding tasks, where the token-efficiency gains compound. But:

• Run your eval suite first; tone and formatting changes may affect downstream parsing.
